1. What Is CNIC in Pakistan?

The Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) is the official ID card issued to Pakistani citizens aged 18 and above by NADRA (National Database and Registration Authority). Each CNIC has a unique 13‑digit number and is required for key activities like opening bank accounts, voting, getting a passport, and buying mobile SIMs.

NADRA Database

NADRA maintains a central database that stores each citizen's core details (name, date of birth, photo, family information, fingerprints etc.) and uses this data for identity verification.

2. CNIC and SIM Registration

In Pakistan, every mobile SIM must be registered against a valid CNIC under PTA's SIM registration and biometric rules.

  • When you buy a new SIM, the seller/franchise sends your CNIC number and fingerprint to NADRA for verification via the Biometric Verification System.
  • Only if NADRA confirms that the CNIC and fingerprints match, the SIM is activated and tied to that CNIC.
  • PTA allows up to 5 SIMs per CNIC across all networks at a time.
Important: This makes your CNIC a critical part of your digital and telecom identity.
